SAL2018, sponsored by Southern Accents Architectural Antiques, Beaty American, and

Architectural Salvage & Antique Lumber News

, kicked off with networking events Sunday evening at two Philadelphia architectural salvage companies. The first stop was Provenance, hosted by Brian McLaughlin – one of the firm’s partners – followed by a visit to Beaty American, hosted by owner Bob Beaty.

Monday morning the group met in a conference room at the Sonesta Hotel in center city Philadelphia to discuss a wide range of issues affecting both the architectural salvage and antique lumber industries. Highlights from that discussion include the group’s consensus to form an industry association, and to draft and adopt a code of conduct to bring additional professionalism and credibility to the industry. Additional details and minutes from the meeting will be shared industry-wide in the near future.

Monday afternoon the group boarded a charter bus to visit two local architectural salvage businesses. At the first stop, owner Mark Charry provided the group with refreshments and a tour of his sprawling Architectural Antiques Exchange, sharing stories along the way about how and where he acquired many of his impressive pieces. The second stop was to Philadelphia Salvage Company where owner Chris Stock and his sister, Samantha, greeted the group with a much-welcomed blazing woodstove, cider and other refreshments designed to warm the soul on a cold day. The group spent quite a while exploring the many twists and turns of Chris’ 35,000-square-feet of architectural and industrial salvage, as well as an impressive collection of antique lumber housed, in a vintage industrial building.
